World Schools 2015 England

England Team at the World Schools Champs

In 2015 the Orienteering Foundation made a grant to help the England team attend the World Schools Orienteering Championships in Turkey.  The additional support was required given the more remote than usual location, but offered a rich orienteering and cultural experience to the juniors.  Some of the quotes received afterwards:

Scottish Team at the World Schools 2015

Scottish Team preparation for the World Schools Champs

The Orienteering Foundation also made a grant to the Scottish Team in relation to the World Schools Championships.  However this was to enhance the overall experience by getting the whole team together for a weekend prior to the competition.  The nature of the championships is such that teams comprise athletes selected from leading schools in each class, as well as a diverse set of individuals in a ‘select’ team.

JROS Coach Development at Lagganlia

The Junior Regional Orienteering Squads (JROS) organise summer junior training camps in Scotland and abroad.  As well as improving the orienteering skills of the juniors, they aim to develop new and young coaches, so that the whole program becomes sustainable.  In 2014 the Orienteering Foundation gave a grant towards this coach development aspect at the Lagganlia training camp.  Quotes from some of the coaches:

Fermanagh Orienteers organise the Junior Home Internationals

In 2011 the Junior Home International was held in Northern Ireland and the Orienteering Foundation gave a grant to the organisers, Fermanagh Orienteers.  The organisers explain how this helped them to involve the local community:

BKO host the British Schools Orienteering

In 2008, BKO received a grant to enhance the British Schools Orienteering Championships.  It paid for a provision of medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each class and for part payment towards certificates and commentary.  These details helped juniors have an enjoyable and fulfilling competition and gave the Championships the status they deserve within the participation pathway.
