ORIENTEERING FOUNDATION

Open Design Orienteering Timing System

We have made a grant to support a proof of concept open source and low cost alternative to SPORTident and EMIT timing systems.

The project from Lawrence Jones seeks produce an alternative to the proprietary SPORTident and EMIT systems. It will establish the basis for an open source orienteering timing system with a proof of concept, leveraging the recent developments and proliferation of RFID technology. The system will use basic RFID cards, easily replicable hardware, freely available software and simple enclosures to ensure the design is easily buildable and usable by clubs starting up or established clubs looking for a low cost timing system. If the proof of concept is successful, this could be further developed into a full system.

This is a great example of an innovative project attempting to further the use of technology within the sport, as described in our earlier article on Technology Innovation, and we look forward to seeing how it goes!
