We are excited to be funding this project led by Tayside Orienteers to support orienteering development work with schools and local communities in the Strathearn area in the lead in to the Scottish 6 Days 2019.

The funding will give offer all P5-7 primary school children in the area an opportunity to have a go at orienteering within school time and also to offer after-school club sessions. Equipment will be provided to the schools, and up to 15 local teachers will be offered training so that they can deliver the majority of the orienteering themselves, helping to make the project sustainable in the long term.

It is hoped that secondary school pupils will also be involved in the project to help develop the sport, generate interest and act as role models. The grant will allow local young people to take part in Scottish Orienteering’s recently-launched Young Leader course (which the Orienteering Foundation also supported previously, see here). This will give them the skills to help support primary school activities, run an inter-school festival and block of after-school club sessions. These volunteering opportunities could make a valuable training contribution towards achievement of Duke of Edinburgh or Saltire Awards.

Tayside Orienteers’ also plan to put on some “Come and Try It” events in the lead up to the 6-Days, to help act as a pathway into the club for youngsters and their families who have enjoyed the school-based activities.
