- Bath University Mountaineering Club grant to attend British Orienteering Championships
The Orienteering Foundation has awarded a grant to Bath University Mountaineering Club (BUMC) to support their participation in the 2026 British Orienteering Championships in South Wales, enabling more students to experience high-level competition and develop their skills.
The Orienteering Foundation is delighted to announce the awarding of a grant to Bath University Mountaineering Club (BUMC), supporting their attendance at the 2026 British Orienteering Championships in South Wales. This funding will enable up to 13 students to compete in both the individual and relay events, providing a unique opportunity for members—many of whom began orienteering at university—to experience elite-level competition on top-quality terrain.
The project addresses a key challenge in orienteering: retaining young participants as they transition through university. By making this major event accessible, BUMC aims to build confidence and inspire long-term involvement in the sport. The Championships, held at Carreg Goch and Margam Country Park, offer technical and social experiences beyond what is typically available to the club, helping members develop their skills and connect with the wider orienteering community.
Financial barriers, such as high entry fees and accommodation costs, often limit participation in such events. The Orienteering Foundation’s support ensures that financial hardship does not prevent enthusiastic students from excelling and continuing their orienteering journey.
Katie Lake, BUMC Orienteering Secretary, said:
This grant makes a real difference for our club. It means more of our members can experience a major competition, develop their skills, and feel part of the wider orienteering community. We’re excited to represent Bath and show our commitment to the sport.
The Orienteering Foundation congratulates BUMC and looks forward to hearing about their experiences at the Championships.
