ORIENTEERING FOUNDATION

Coaching day November 2024 update

We faced bad weather for the Orienteering Foundation coaching day in the Lakes on Saturday 23rd November. We looked into rerunning it at the same location in January for those that couldn’t make it, but unfortunately access permission issues have prevented this. Sorry. See below for details.

Unfortunately we faced very bad weather on Saturday 23rd November (original details). Conditions varied across the country and even within the Lake District. Some "only" encountered heavy rain and strong winds where they lived, but around Graythwaite it was snowing and driving needed a lot of care. In the end only 9 individuals attended plus groups from WCOC and NATO. Of the others (we have 50 individuals registered, and another 70 - 80 in club groups from the above clubs plus PFO, CLOK, LOC and SROC) they either didn't set off, or got close and turned back. The LOC event the following day at Bethecar was cancelled.

Those who did attend still got lots of value out of the training, despite the conditions!

LOC have rescheduled their Bethecar event for Sunday 19th January 2025, and we tried to get permissions to reschedule the Orienteering Foundation coaching day for Saturday 18th January. Sadly that hasn’t been possible (and nor are we considering replanning on a new area, for the middle of winter, which could turn out to be bad weather again). Apologies to anyone who was hoping for some Lakes training.

We hopefully look forward to welcoming people back to another coaching day in autumn 2025.

We are very grateful to Derek for everything he has done preparing for the coaching day, managing conditions on the day for those who turn up (and communicating with those who didn't), also being the controller for the day after (!), and making best efforts with the rescheduling.

Meanwhile, if anyone is feeling like they have the winter blues, and wants to look forward to some warmer weather training, Julia Preston - who is one of the coaches who works with Derek coaching individuals on the Orienteering Foundation coaching day - is taking a group to the Amber O-Week training in Latvia in April. See flyer for details. Please note: this is not organised by or affiliated with the Orienteering Foundation, but we are happy to advertise it here as it is organised by one of our coaches.
