ORIENTEERING FOUNDATION

Coaching day November 2024 update

We faced bad weather for the Orienteering Foundation coaching day in the Lakes on Saturday 23rd November. We are looking at whether we can reschedule / rerun it on Saturday 19th January 2025. See below for details.

Unfortunately we faced very bad weather on Saturday 23rd November (original details). Conditions varied across the country and even within the Lake District. Some "only" encountered heavy rain and strong winds where they lived, but around Graythwaite it was snowing and driving needed a lot of care. In the end only 9 individuals attended plus groups from WCOC and NATO. Of the others (we have 50 individuals registered, and another 70 - 80 in club groups from the above clubs plus PFO, CLOK, LOC and SROC) they either didn't set off, or got close and turned back. The LOC event the following day at Bethecar was cancelled.

Those who did attend still got lots of value out of the training, despite the conditions!

LOC have rescheduled their Bethecar event for Sunday 19th January 2025, and we are trying to get permissions to reschedule the Orienteering Foundation coaching day for Saturday 18th January. Watch this space for confirmation.

If we manage to reschedule, those who were registered and paid to attend before (individuals or groups) will have their registration carried over for no additional cost. Any additional individuals, groups or group members will also be very welcome to register. Once we have the date confirmed, we'll update details here, and Derek will reach out to those who were registered before to see whether they can make the new date.

We are very grateful to Derek for everything he has done preparing for the coaching day, managing conditions on the day for those who turn up (and communicating with those who didn't), also being the controller for the day after (!), and continuing to support us with the rescheduling.

Meanwhile, if anyone is feeling like they have the winter blues, and wants to look forward to some warmer weather training, Julia Preston - who is one of the coaches who works with Derek coaching individuals on the Orienteering Foundation coaching day - is taking a group to the Amber O-Week training in Latvia in April. See flyer for details. Please note: this is not organised by or affiliated with the Orienteering Foundation, but we are happy to advertise it here as it is organised by one of our coaches.
