ORIENTEERING FOUNDATION

Freddie Carcas at The World Games

We are pleased to be supporting Freddie Carcas with the costs of attending The World Games taking place in China this month.

The costs of being an international athlete in orienteering can be high, considering the various training camps and competitions each year, often taking place abroad (WOC last year in Edinburgh was the exception!). British Orienteering covers entry fees, and a very modest budget beyond that, but the majority of the cost of accommodation, and all travel / flights fall directly to the athletes. This is not felt more acutely than for those travelling to Chengdu in China this August for The World Games. Therefore we are pleased when we can support our athletes with those costs as in this case.

The World Games takes place every 4 years, as a counterpart to the Olympics for the next tier of sports not in the Olympics. Orienteering proudly takes it place, and the program includes a middle, sprint and mixed sprint relay. The World Games locations are selected based on many factors, not including proximity to traditionally good orienteering terrain, so it can take orienteers to some exciting places. This year China hosts, and the middle distance kicked off with racing around terraces of orange groves in quite unusual terrain.

Freddie has specialised in sprint orienteering, and made a fantastic WOC debut in Edinburgh last year, running a strong 2nd leg in the mixed sprint relay to keep the team firmly in contention for a good result. We wish Freddie and all the team the best of luck at The World Games.
