Funding JROS junior coaching development
We are pleased to be once again helping fund junior coach development at the JROS junior training camp at Lagganlia in 2019
Since its inception in 2009, the Junior Regional Orienteering Squads (JROS) has organised and managed a training camp aimed at athletes aged 14-15 at Lagganlia Outdoor Eduation Centre in the Cairngorms, Scotland. In many ways this camp has become the flagship of the four summer camps that JROS organises each year, and for many juniors it represents the first rung on a national development ladder.
With reductions in national funding for orienteering at talent and performance levels, it is increasingly important that this camp continues. But not only for the juniors attending - JROS is committed to developing youth athletes as junior coaches on the camp, who are willing to give up part of their summer, etiher as a break from University studies or by using part of their summer holidays from work, to help coaching the up and coming juniors.
JROS typically attracts 6 junior coaches to assist with coaching, supported by at least as many fully qualified coaches who mentor and guide them to deliver real coaching sessions in quality Scottish terrain. Or funding will help cover expenses of those junior coaches, making the initiative financially viable.
Furthermore these junior coaching opportunities are not one-offs. At least a dozen junor coaches who started out at Lagganlia have gone on to coach again at that or other JROS camps, as senior coaches and one even as a lead coach, and many also coach for their regional orienteering squad back home.
