Growing Orienteering Roots in Gleadless Valley

Following the Orienteering Foundation’s grant to Heeley Trust earlier this year (see award), the "Explore Gleadless Valley" project has successfully introduced local families to orienteering through engaging community events. The initiative is helping build confidence, map-reading skills, and long-term participation in the sport.

In August 2025, Heeley Trust launched the "Explore Gleadless Valley" project with support from the Orienteering Foundation. Set in Hang Bank Wood near Bankwood Primary School, the initiative hosted two family fun days featuring picnics and orienteering activities led by Pauline Tryner, SYO’s development officer. Local families were invited through schools, libraries, GP practices, and community partners.

The project aimed to make the woodlands of Gleadless Valley feel safer and more accessible, especially for children and families unfamiliar with outdoor navigation. Beyond the events, the project promotes long-term engagement through updated maps, school league participation, and the introduction of MapRun as a sustainable activity.

This grassroots effort is already making strides in connecting communities with nature and the sport of orienteering.
