ORIENTEERING FOUNDATION

Lakeland Orienteering Club coach education

LOC

We are pleased to be awarding a grant to Lakeland Orienteering Club towards coach education courses

Lakeland Orienteering Club (LOC) have identified that their pool of club coaches is dwindling, the ones left are getting older, and they need to attract younger club members to join the coaching group. With more coaches they can then deliver series of coaching days with a view to increasing membership and engagement in the club.

The coach development plan is twofold:

Firstly, putting on Introduction to Coaching Courses. These 5 hour workshops are intended to equip club orienteers with skills and understanding which will allow them to give an effective introduction to orienteering to beginners of any age, usually working under the guidance of a qualified coach, or at a registered event as part of the ‘meet & greet’ team.

Secondly, putting on Level 2 Coach Courses. These target club orienteers already working with & helping groups or individuals, but who aren't yet qualified coaches, as well as more experienced orienteers who want to develop their o-ing experience into coaching skills. The Level 2 course consists of 2 days of training with a 3rd assessment day.

The Orienteering Foundation grant will help with putting on these courses, and the courses will be opened up to members from neighbouring clubs as space allows. LOC then have a follow-on program of coaching activities planned to make use of the newly educated coaches.
