MAROC Scottish 6 days development project
We are excited to make a grant to Mar Orienteering Club (MAROC) to support a development project in the run up to the Scottish 6 Days taking place on Deeside this summer.
Since November 2024 the volunteers of MAROC have been working on a pathway to provide the local public of Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen some basic skills and knowledge to allow them to participate in the S6D and ideally become members of MAROC (or GRAMP, depending on location). The activities already planned by the club are:
- IntrO courses to provide adults (e.g. teachers, Scout/Guide Leaders, outdoor instructor, etc) with the skills to introduce others (primarily children) to our sport.
- Introductory block of 3 training sessions followed by free entry to a regional event for families and adults.
- Regular programme of regional, local evening sprint, and training events.
- Continuing to promote the club’s activities using social media.
The specific objectives of the new development project led by a club development officer would complement these activities with the following:
- Outreach to community and other groups (e.g. running clubs, other sports clubs, Scouts/Guides, etc) with a view to putting on taster sessions for these groups.
- Taster sessions at community events, school fairs, village shows, etc.
- Come-and-try events (the likes of which have previously been very successful for MAROC).
- Publicising the S6D at all of the above occasions and provide information about how to take part.
- Gathering contact information for people interested in orienteering and keeping them updated with opportunities.
We wish MAROC all the best in the coming months leading up to the S6D.
